Australia is preparing to celebrate a new generation of AI storytellers with the launch of the Australian AI Film Awards, a new national platform dedicated to recognising the filmmakers, creators and studios shaping the future of screen storytelling through artificial intelligence.
Launching at Something Fest in Brisbane on 26 August 2026, the inaugural edition will bring together Australian and international creators for a celebration of AI-powered filmmaking. From outstanding short films and AI music videos to regional storytellers and groundbreaking experimental projects, the Awards aim to showcase the creative possibilities of AI across multiple forms of cinematic expression.
Five Award Categories
The 2026 edition includes five categories:
- Best International AI Film
- Best Australian AI Film
- Best Regional Storyteller
- Best AI Music Video
- Best Experimental AI Project
These categories give both Australian and international creators the opportunity to present films, music videos and experimental projects made with AI.
An International Jury of Industry Leaders
One of the defining features of the Australian AI Film Awards is its international judging and mentorship panel.
Bringing together Hollywood directors, Emmy-nominated screenwriters, leading VFX experts, award-winning producers and internationally recognised AI storytellers, the panel reflects the festival’s ambition to connect emerging creators with some of the industry’s most experienced professionals.
Among the announced judges and mentors are David Hackl, director of SAW V; Adam Gilad, Emmy-nominated screenwriter; Jim Dodson, former Fox production executive and producer of The Night Agent; and David Freeman, former Disney and Fox executive.
