Surabaya, late 1990s. Reno, a 13-year-old junior high student, is dared by his friends to prove his courage: go alone to the red-light district of Kembang Kuning, armed with nothing but five hundred rupiahs and a single matchstick. They say, with just one lit match, you can “peek under the skirt”—as long as the flame stays alive.
“Kembang Kuning” is a tale of adolescent bravado, biting taunts, and a night that shifts the course of a life. An absurd reflection on identity, courage, and how a small flame can ignite the journey toward becoming oneself.
