Bella has been living in the market for as long as she can remember — not as a buyer, not as a seller, but as someone who has mistaken busyness for healing.
When Wewe Gombel appears from green smoke carrying a banana flower filled with photographs of Bella’s abandoned childhood, Bella does the only thing she knows how to do: she laughs, and tells her to leave.
But denial, when left untreated long enough, takes on a body of its own.
RECKONING is a surrealist meditation on the violence of self-rejection — the moment when the part of us that refuses to forgive the past grows large enough to strike us down. Set within the FOR SALE cinematic universe, the film follows Bella across a world where memory is currency, identity is inventory, and the things we leave behind have a way of finding us.
High above the red market, on floating islands suspended between clouds, an old woman and a laughing child wait. The child is Bella — the version of her that existed before the world taught her to be afraid. She has been kept safe, all this time, by the very creature the mythology warned her about.
Bella is not ready to go back.
But some things always find their way back.
RECKONING explores themes of inherited trauma, self-forgiveness, and the Javanese mythology of Wewe Gombel reframed as a figure of preservation rather than predation. The film employs AI-generated cinematography across a fully original visual universe built on the intersection of Javanese-Chinese cultural memory and contemporary surrealist cinema.
