Romania, 1988. A cooperative worker in Oradea is demoted for coming in late. He says nothing.
Over the next forty-eight days, in his sister’s back yard, he rebuilds his
Dacia (car) to run on a railway line: four steel wheels, a grille under the bumper, and sheets of conveyor-belt rubber glued along the doors – up to the height of his daughter’s head.
On 15 July 1988 he waits for the international express to pass, lifts the car onto the tracks, and drives west with his wife and child.
The state had him on file since 1984. They wrote down who he drank with. They wrote down every morning he came late. Nobody ever looked in the yard.
