Brain in a Vat was awarded Best Animated AI Narrative Short at the 2025 Beijing International Film Festival
Director’s Statement
This film attempts to blend two classic sci-fi concepts — Star Trek-style space exploration and the Brain in a Vat thought experiment — to create a narrative reversal. These two ideas also serve as dual metaphors for the parent-child relationship, offering a more layered and multidimensional reflection.
Technical Overview
We trained a dedicated AI model tailored to the film’s specific visual style and narrative needs, making it more suitable for traditional storytelling. A custom ComfyUI workflow was developed to integrate the trained model with both pre- and post-production tools, generating consistent images and video. We also applied 3D techniques to unify environmental design and used traditional 2D animation layout and cinematography methods to maintain character design consistency and expressive control. This project represents a new approach to combining large-scale AI generation with traditional animation production.
